Stacey Abrams on Campus for the 2019 GSUMUN Opening Ceremony
With a standing ovation and close to 1,000 attendees, Stacey Abrams was welcomed today to Georgia State University High School Model of the United Nations (GSU MUN) conference’s opening ceremony. The GSU MUN is the second-largest MUN conference in the south, with more than 900 delegates from 43 schools across metro Atlanta.
Under the supervision of GSU Principal Senior Lecturer of Political Science, Dr. Rashid Naim, the current GSUMUN team include Kaycie Pitts as the Secretary-General and Miranda Stinson as the Director-General. Ms. Pitts is a GSU Model UN alum who received the Golden Gavel in 2018 as the Director of General Assembly 3rd Committee. She currently works at the International Rescue Committee in Atlanta.
Stacey Abrams is a politician, lawyer, and author who served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017 and served as minority leader from 2011 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, she was the party’s nominee in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election. Abrams was the first black female major-party gubernatorial nominee in the history of the United States. In February 2019, she became the first African-American woman to deliver a response to the State of the Union address.
